Leadership Through Service: 3rd Grade

Third-grade students learned about the LA River in their social studies curriculum. They partnered with Friends of the LA River to participate in a water lab, create water filtration devices, and make native seed pods to later grow in our Los Encinos native garden. Third grade students also took care of our native garden throughout the year, even designing and cutting tile with Mrs. Nelson’s husband, Mitch, in order to decorate the wall.

Students also take agency in promoting their own service learning ideas. For example, a team of third-grade students came up with the idea of making hygiene kits for underprivileged people in our neighborhoods. The students collected various essential items from our generous parent community over several months, and they then assembled hundreds of hygiene kits for distribution. Students also created school-wide drives for batteries and another for solar eclipse glasses.
